If you want to roll hard, forget digging with a trowel, drill those sets in with an earth auger !

I use the 2" auger, works in harder ground as well. Allows me to make a deep dirt hole so the canine has to move a lot to get to the bait.

I purchased the 2" auger. I've been impressed with the speed and design of the auger. It's a real time saver for making dirt holes and retrieving earth anchors.
